Floss or Ammonia Inserts in Goldfish tank filters?
Years ago, there weren’t any Ammonia filter sections. Just Charcoal, Sponge, and FLOSS. Would it be O.K. to remove the Ammonia insert in my Aqua Clear 70 filters, and put Floss in it instead? I am having a lot of trouble with cloudy water and dirt floating in it constantly. P.S. I know Goldfish are dirty! Are the Ammonia stones in the bag too soft and causing the white cloudy water all the time?
The stuff in an AquaClear ammonia insert is zeolite (a type of natural stone that absorbs ammonia from fresh water). Assuming you followed the directions by rinsing the filter media before you put it in the filter, zeolite will not make the water cloudy or white.
Cloudy, whitish or grey water is most often caused by a bacterial bloom, which is typical of relatively new tanks (running for no more than a few months), but under certain conditions could also happen in a tank that has been running longer. Neither filter floss nor zeolite will clear a bacterial bloom, or most other kinds of cloudy water. However, it typically goes away on its own with time.
If you can see “dirt” floating in the water, though, you either are not doing enough water changes or you have insufficient filtration. You didn’t say the size of your tank or how many goldfish are in it, but you may need to clean or change your filter media more often, and do more water changes in which you vacuum all the sediment out of the gravel with each change. If those measures don’t solve the problem, you may need a larger or more powerful filter (or a second filter on the tank).
